I'm frustrated. Trav just got back from a 7 1/2 month deployment. 3 weeks later he has to go to Ft. Polk, LA for 10 days. Last night Trav called me and let me know a few things he found out.
Trav went and spoke to some branch manager people (BMP) in LA. He was talking about what would happen when we leave Maryland. The BMP told him that he would have to go to Captain's course at Ft. Huachuca when we PCS (permanent change of station) from here. That we thought would happen, and look forward to, we love Huachuca. Then the blow came: currently they are taking the Captains that graduate from captain's course and shipping them off to Iraq to train the Iraqi militia. They said it is almost guaranteed that he would go. Trav asked if they took into account dwell time (the amount of time they have been home from deployment). He thought that they might but wasn't sure.
What this means for us: Trav hits his 3 year mark here in February. They are trying to keep soldiers in one spot for at least 3 years. Trav was hoping that he could extend his time here so as to postpone when he went to captains course. We would go to Huachuca for 5-6 months and then Trav would go to Iraq and I would go to our next PCS move. This is where the anxiety sets in, I would be living the deployment in a brand new area with more kids than we have right now.
Again, I'm really frustrated with the military. They try and sell it as being very family friendly, but they are having a hard time convincing me! Do they really think that its helpful to the family to have him deploy every 18 months? Part of me wants Trav to get out of the military and have a normal job where he goes on business trips and then comes home and that's that. I'm very interested in the next elections. I guess you know one issue to which I'll be paying close attention.
Just a count. Trav and I have been married 5 years and 8 months (68 months)
We have been apart for:
24 months of our marriage
3 of 6 of Trav's birthdays
3 of 6 Thanksgivings
2 of 5 anniversaries
1 Christmas
1 of my birthdays
Lauren's First Birthday and many other firsts (sitting, crawling, walking, first words, teeth)
Rachels' Firsts (sitting, teeth, words, etc. - although he was the first to see her crawl!)
... having my husband home every night ... PRICELESS

U2
I've taken a bit of a break from posting while Trav has been home. I've enjoyed the rest, but should post something so as to not offend the 10 people that read my blog.
Rob, my brother-in-law is a die-hard U2 fan. He has every album they've put out, him and my sister drove down to Sacramento (a 2 hour drive) to watch U2 3-D the movie, and his man-crush is Bono. Recently on his blog he posted about his beloved U2. It was a great post, very intriguing, but it made me remember something...
It was 1993, it was a hot summer in Wyoming and I was at my very first Youth Conference. For those who don't know, a youth conference in the LDS Church is a conference for youth. Glad that is cleared up. :) It was for kids 14 and up. This year the conference was held in Buffalo, WY. It was filled with lots of dancing, service projects, games, and classes. It was at one of these dances that I decided I liked this other 14 year old boy, we'll call him Jacob (I can't remember his first name - last name is Trout). I had been eyeing Jacob all week long.
It came down to the last night and there was a dance to close up the conference. It was a huge gymnasium stocked with lots of hormonal teens. I had this theory that no one asked me to dance because a boy didn't want to come up to a pack of my girlfriends and ask me to dance, it didn't have anything to do with me being overweight and having really pretty friends. For a while I tried to sit apart from them, there would be a group of my friend sitting a talking and I would be a few chairs away trying to add to their conversation, but trying not to look too intimidating for any possible boys that might come up. Anyway, that failed. I didn't get asked to dance.
Finally the evening was coming to a close, so I decided to ask Jacob for a slow dance. So I was reveling in the fact that I was dancing with this boy that I'd been crushing on all week. I started talking to him and asked him questions about himself.
"So where are you from?"
Jacob says, "I'm from Moorcroft."
"Oh, wow that's great. What kind of music do you like?"
He pauses for a second and then looks me in the eye and I hear, "I like you too." My heart skips a beat, he likes me, he really likes me. Then I start thinking, wow that was kind of out of the blue. My reply was something like, "Thank you!" He kind of looks at me strange and then we finish the dance.
As I go walking back to my group of friends, I start replaying the conversation in my head. "What kind of music do you like?"
"I like you too." Wait... "I like U2!"
Oh, Crap, I'm an idiot. Where was Rob when I needed him. Why didn't I have better taste in music, and why oh why didn't I know right away he was talking about a band.
I've not shared this story with anyone, because I was really embarrassed for being so dumb. Rob's post brought it all to the fore-front.
